From Afar directed
Lorenzo Vigas was one of the films shown at the Latin American and Spanish Film
Festival at Lawrence University (LULASFF). The movie, a psychological drama, is
about a man named Armando. Armando has daddy issues and issues from a lack of
attention. Because of this, he pays young men for sex and their company, but
there is never any touching. One of these young men is Elder. The relationship
between Armando and Elder is based on attention, romance and the role of a
father.
Like the
aesthetics of hunger seen in other Latin American films, Elder is a poor young
man without a father, a member of a gang and a product of Caracas’ society. At
the beginning, Armando paid Elder for his sexual company, however he beat up
Armando. After, their relationship developed because they both have daddy
issues. During their childhoods, their fathers were absent from their lives,
leaving them with emotional issues. During the film, they both play the role of
the seducer. Their relationship is complicated because Armando is a lover and a
father for Elder, but they also live in a society that doesn’t accept homosexuality.
Even though the movie is about a gay romance, it is also very disturbing. Their
relationship is more than friendship, but it goes too far. The end of the movie
is surprising and the result of miscommunication.
The cinematography
is deliberating detached. There are very few words spoken and a lot more
emotions portrayed. These feelings are shown through the body languages and the
shots of their faces. The eyes say everything in the opening scene, without one
word spoken. The camera angle focuses a lot on the face and captures the
message. These characteristics of the cinematography make the film artist and
independent.
The movie, From
Afar is a commentary on the importance of a father and homosexuality in Caracas.
In the cases of Armando and Elder, they needed each other. Although the story
is good, the beauty of the film is in the cinematography. The movie would be
nothing without the characteristic cinematography.
