The
Simple Beauty of Summer 1993
Summer
1993, the first film
directed by Carla Simón, is about a young girl lost in her grief surrounding
the death of her mother. The film examines the grieving process of Frida and
the difficulty that she feels when she is moved to the house of her uncle
Esteve and her aunt Marga. It examines the new situation in which Frida learns
to live with new parental figures in the forms of Esteve and Marga and a new
sister in the form of her cousin Anna. In a completely new environment, Frida
processes her grief and the fact that she will never see her mother again.
Simón shows this emotional journey from jealous and anger to acceptance with
care and subtlety. The power of her scenes is simple but strong nonetheless.
What Simón does best can be seen in
the interactions between Frida and Anna. They all have a sense of tension,
contrasting the childhood naiveté and the profound jealous that Frida feels
surrounding her cousin and her complete family. The young actresses have a
natural chemistry that makes the audience feel as if they are observing two
young girls enjoying a typical summer day. It appears more like a scene of two
friends and less like a scene of two actresses. It does not appear forced at
all.
Summer
1993 is in all a charming and simple film that never tries to be more
complicated than necessary. It simply uses the unique point of view of Frida to
show a difficult summer of growth and acceptance. It shows the process of
grieving from a young perspective and how it leads to the creation of a new
definition of family, while still reminding viewers that the pain of death
never fades completely.
