The Tempest:
The story is told by two women who, “Have suffered injustice, corruption, insecurity, and rampant impunity from living in Mexico everyday” (Solorano). The first voice is that of Mariam. She works in the airport and was falsely accused of human trafficking. She was sent away from her son to a prison controlled by gangs. The second voice is of Adela. She works in a traveling circus with members of her family and is a clown. 20 years ago, her daughter was kidnapped and she has spent most of the rest of her life trying to find her. The daughter’s boyfriend at the time was a son of a policeman, so Adela believes he was behind the kidnapping.
The film wanted to show the horrors the women faced during their contact with the police and people of authority. In the review by Lucero Solorano, she says that many people ignore or are customs to the problems of others that result in ignorance about death and injustice. She says, "in this country we go, painfully, developing a resistance and indifference to the daily tragedies that are suffering in every corner of this torn nation" (Solorano). Ken Jaworoski says more about the technical aspects of the film. He says that, the director/editor uses voice-over shots that are only a little related to what the characters say (Jaworoski).
I think the ideas about the stories that were told were weakened when attention shifts to the other story. They switched so rapidly the audience didn’t get enough time to relate to the character on screen before it moved to another person. The stories individually don't have a unifying clear vision to connect the two. Miriam's story she told during her bus trip, (where the audience never sees her face or body) distances the audience from the characters in the documentary. In the end, I had no strong emotions because I cannot connect to the two women. That contributes to this is that the film was very slow, and the visuals are not memorable because they are very similar in color and aesthetic (most shots in the film were very similar and then, bored to look at). I do not like the film, "The Tempest" because the message is not as strong as you can be and I feel that there is a lack of direction in the aesthetics of production or creation of this film.
