Julieta is a movie about a mother facing her
guilt and regret about her relationship with her daughter. The 2016 film,
written and directed by Pedro Almodóvar, is based on three short stories from
the book Runaway by Alice Munro. This
drama starts with Julieta, a mother who lost contact with her daughter many
years ago. She meets one of her daughter’s old friends, Beatriz, and begins to
think about her daughter, Antía. She learns that her daughter is living in
Switzerland and has three children. Julieta lives in Madrid but is about to
move to Portugal with her boyfriend Lorenzo but after the encounter, she
decides to move into the house in Madrid where she raised Antía.
Julieta writes in a journal for Antía and
explains the events that led to their separation and starts off with writing
about Xoan, Antía’s father and a fisherman. The flashback shows their first
time meeting on a train as well as the death of a man who was hit by the train.
Xoan’s wife who was a vegetable, died, and Julieta and Xoan begin a relationship.
While Antía is at summer camp, they have a fight about Xoan’s friend Ana y
Julieta leaves the house and Xoan goes fishing but is killed because of the
storm. After Julieta tells Antía about her father’s death, they rent an
apartment in Madrid but then Antía goes on a spiritual trip for three months.
When the three months is over, Julieta drives to pick Antía up but Antía left
without leaving her mother an address. It is sad because the only contact she
has with her daughter is birthday cards, which are blank. She destroys any
history of her daughter because she is angry. Back in the present time, Lorenzo
gives Julieta a letter from Antía, which has her address on it, and so Lorenzo
and Julieta drive to see her.
The end of the movie is disappointing and
there were multiple complaints from the audience when it ended. The movie does
not show Julieta and Antía reuniting and since the whole movie was leading up
to the interaction, the movie left many people feeling empty and unfulfilled.
The flashbacks and the colors are the most interesting parts of the movie
because during the flashbacks, Julieta is more colorfully dressed than she is
in the present time. The colors help represent her mental state, expressing how
depressed she is without her daughter. The flashbacks allow the audience to
follow Julieta throughout her life and help us understand her struggles and
reasons for her guilt and regret. I think the script was weak and disorganized
but the acting was good.
I would recommend Julieta because it
is a great story about guilt and regret about family situations and this allows
audiences to relate. The ending was disappointing but the audience leaves the
movie feeling hopeful because with communication and work, relationships can be
healed just like the relationship between Antía and Julieta.
